Task- 5 Examples of Short films

 Drama/thriller

 Narrative
The narrative reflected through this film is well suited to the title. A woman who always appears to be alone, even if someone is with her or if she is surrounded by people, the feel you get is she is a lonely to herself person. From being stressed from work she calls her friend to tell her shes going camping for 2 days, so that she can have some "alone time". When arriving at her destination, she takes pictures of the scenery. The camera is always being used by her, and when she returns home she arravies at a shop where she gets her photos processed. When returning to her home she flicks through the photos she took, which we then see photos of her asleep taken by someone else. Who may it be? We see she wasn't alone in her "alone time".

Characterisation
Throughout the film there is only one main character, who has been put together very well. The emotions carried out through the character is well suited to the narrative and the title of the film. Throughout the film the character barley speaks, which determines this feeling of being alone. Body language used is very enclosed and subtle to signify the lack of expression the women gives, due to her being lonely and to herself. The women uses facial expression at the start to reflect that she is distressed and fed up and these emotions are making her want to to a break and be spontaneous. When she finally changes her scenery and goes camping we see a change in the character. Her body language is more at ease and energetic and her overall presentation is happier representing how she needed to get away from the stress at home.

Camera work
There is a variety of camera work used in this short film. Wide shots are frequently used to set the diegesis/ narrative and to emphasizes the location setting. There are some close up shots used throughout the film to capture the women's unsettled emotions, which is effective as we get to understand the character more. Medium close ups have been used as well to give a partial view of the background, here it is used to show people looking at the women; however she is almost trapped in her own world and is oblivious to everything. Over the shoulder shot has been used around the shot to emphasizes how lonely she is, watching from her perspective other people enjoying speaking. Camera movement that has been used it zooming in to allow the audience to focus on the main subject matter, this case being the woman. Zooming out has also been used to effect viewers adjustments on focus, a wider shot becomes visual. Tracking has been used to bring the sense of movement. Tilt up and tilt downs is a camera movement used to create the effect of eye line match, when the women is looking at the picture and then we as an audience see it.

Editing
There is a lack of editing techniques, there has been cuts throughout the film to show different shot angles and to show the changing of locations/scenes.

Horror

Narrative
The narrative begins with a young boy walking to his car, the location is dark and gloomy, which adds to the horror genre. The boy starts to feel nervous and on edge as he hears unusual sounds over his music. The narrative kicks in when we as an audience and the boy see a disfigured demon in the shadows. The dramatic affect and suspense is created here and we see the journey of how the boy tries to escape this demon that has targeted him. It is a truly gripping and tense narrative.

Characterisation
The boy at the start seems like a stereotypical young male who has a passion for music, appealing to the target audience of young males. It is clear the change in his character from a confident casual male to when sound affects are added into the film. The fear in his expression is reflected effectively to the audience, making us aware that there will be a horrific action soon, and making us fear for the male. Throughout the film the boy is panicking and has a lot of adrenaline, which makes us as an audience have adrenaline for him to get safe and to beat the demon.

Camera work
There has been lots of different shot types such as wide shots and long shots to create the diegesis. The gloomy and dark location already adds to the gripping and tense narrative, reinforcing the genre of horror. Close ups and medium shots have been used throughout the film to focus on the boys facial expressions, where we see fear in him, making the audience fear for him, involving us in the film. A slider has been used throughout to follow the movement of the boy and to add to the fast pace. This involves the audience in the action and reinforces the tense and fearful feeling the film is trying to provoke from us.

Editing
A glitch affect has been used at the start of the film to create a spooky and intense mood straight away, and to reinforce the horror genre. CGI has been used to create a stereotypical disfigured demon, which again reinforces the horror genre of the film. Throughout the film there is audio and the whistle sound is an indication that the demon will appear, creating a link to the title. Audio has also been used to create tension and to make a viewer feel tense whilst watching. Lots of fast cuts have been used to create a fast pace to the film which links to the narrative. Cuts have also been used to create an affect that the street lights have blown out, which is effective as it makes the viewer jump, reinforcing the genre of horror. At the end there has been special affects added such as lighting and colour.

Documentary

Narrative
This documentary is about neglect. It a documented true story and personal story to a young boy who has been victimized in a divorce between his to parents. It opens and emotional side and informs people the effect divorces have on the children, which is often not spoken about. It subverts from typically conversations  on the two people in the relationship who are separating and speaks for may children who suffer from the situation their parents have created. In his story he speaks bravely of how he coped with the situation such as studying at school, although this wasn't a big enough distraction. He speaks about how he had to move to another country meaning he could only see his mum once a year.

Characterisation
As this is a documented speech about his emotions and thoughts towards divorces, there is no put on character. This male allows us to see his deep emotional side to how he has coped in a situation many people have to face, appealing to a young target audience.

Camera work
Throughout the documentary we are shown clips of families and people together, visualizing how families should be. There is many medium shots to gain focus on facial expressions to reflect different moods, as well as long shots and wide shots to reflect the males story and the journeys as a family.

Editing
There are cuts between him recording himself and the vision of his story, which is effective as it makes the narrative more understandable for an audience. There is a soft audio in the background as well to provoke an emotional mood from the audience.

Romance

Narrative
A monologue by the main male character, of a girl who he once fell in love with questioning why they fell in love. The narrative begins where the young couple met and how there relationship develop into love. The film explores what they did together with a voice over of the male describing his love for this girl, missing her, but not wanting to technically get back together. He questions the reason of them falling love as he feels he has the answer to why they ended but not why they started.

Characterisation
Both characters have a deep connection together, through out the whole film. It is a stereotypical young love narrative. The male character at the start is reflected as distressed at first, although hes at a social party, he appear to smoke alone. As soon as he sees the female character his attitude changes and appear vibrant in the film, as he has the feeling of love. Body language such as holding hands, hugging and kissing is involved in the short film, which reinforce the genre of romance and companionship, appealing to their target audience (females mainly). The film is cycled back to the depressed and mundane lifestyle. This is shown by the change in the characterization of both characters, as the appear to be unhappy and disconnected.

Camera work
There has been a variety of shot types used such as medium shots and close ups to focus on the emotions on the characters face. This is effective as it shows the development on the characters feeling they have gained for each other, but also signifies when the relationship went wrong indicating a change of mood. There has been long shots and wide shots used as well to show the two characters adventures together, appealing to their target audience of young teenagers as this is something they would do with a partner or even close friend. It also makes the audience feel involved within the characters Journey. They have used a slider movement to follow the characters movement in the film, which again makes the audience feel involved in the love between the two characters.

Editing
There has been cuts across the film to create the narrative and the story, so it is understandable to an audience. The editing is basic as the main attention is on the connection between the couple. A voice over is added to the film as the narrative is based on the boys perspective. At the end of the film the credits have used positive lighting and title transitions to connote the happiness that was reflected partly in the film.

Comedy/ Crime

Narrative
The narrative to this film is about two young men who are friends, engage together in a crime to steal a jewelry store. However right from the start you can tell it will be disaster, as one of the robbers is wearing a business suit. They enter the store, guns on the ready to tackle anyone who is in their way; however they soon notice that no one is there so one of the boys has a mini fit and almost wants to leave because he didn't get any action, but his partner wheels him in to staying. When they open the boxes they are shock to see what is in the package. Well it isn't jewelry! Luckily as well no one saw them as they soon admit the guns are fake! A funny crime gone wrong.

Characterisation
The characters acting methods suit the genre of the short film. The two characters have a posh accent which subverts from a stereotypical Heist, as well this is reinforced by the style of clothing the two actors are wearing (casual/formal). The characters have opposite personality, as one is energetic and ready to start the mission; however the formal dressed man is more nervous, which brings the element of comedy genre into the film.

Camera work
There is a variety of camera techniques used in this film. There is a wide shot that has been used which sets the location (diegies). When the actors are using dialogue there is over the shoulder shots to gain focus on the actor speaking but to also signify that the actors are in a conversation. Close up shots have been used to gain focus on the actors, especially when humor is involved so there facial expressions reflect through. A low angle is used to connote power and dominance in the two actors, however this come across humorous as previously we can tell that the characters are not prepared for their mission. In this short film they have used a slider to emphasise the discreet movement both actors are using and to follow the actors, which makes the audience feel more involved in the film. Eye line match has also been used to create suspense when the characters open the first box, the comedy genre is reflected here as we see that the boxes are full of toys not jewelry.

Editing
There has been a title transition added to the film, which reads the title. Other than that the editing has been basic. There has only been cuts added to the short film. Audio has been added on the end for the credit scene.
